I've just come home from seeing Willy Mason play the first night of his first headlining tour in Leeds - or at least he claimed it was his first night as a headliner, anyway. I'm listening to his new(ish) album with new(ish) ears and thought I'd share it with you.
It's certainly a bigger sound than his first album, his voice is deeper and the production is a lot less brutal. I know these facts have displeased the naysayers, but it does make it a more friendly record to listen to.
He has two other guitarists with him on stage and they all spent more time tuning their guitars than a rock venue is used to, and the audience ranged from embarrassingly rapturous to audibly disinterested, but, overall, it was a great way to spend a Monday night. Highly recommended. More tour dates and information here.
