Emily Portman - Hatchlings

We are still here, but music worth posting has felt hard to to come by. This is an exception and I discussed this song and the myth behind it with Beth pretty much as soon as I'd heard it. Not sure there will be an album of the year round-up, but this is one of the best songs I've heard in 2012.

Beachwood Sparks - Talk About Lonesome

Every Summer I load up the mp3 player with Beach Boys and Beachwood Sparks, get out my 12 string guitar and pretend I'm in a soft rock band with country pretensions. It has been so long since the last Beachwood Sparks EP that I've worn out the vinyl and am on my second CD. Perhaps I shouldn't take them to the beach. This might not be up for long so grab the sunshine whilst you can.

Rave on John Donne

Gosh, it's been so long that blogger has a whole new look and now you've got to put forced breaks in, the lot. Still, things are looking a bit different these days.

Suffice to say that it's been a time, or, as Van says, time down through the weeks of ages.

Don't knock early 80s Van. I've had this on repeat for months now. Howard is staging an intervention.

Rave on words on printed page.

Listen: Van Morrison - Rave on John Donne

Buy this slice of Van here - it really is a swoony celtic belter.

Dusty Springfield - What are you doing with the rest of your life?

Did you check the Tammy St John youtube below? I'm still looking for an mp3 - let me know in the comments if you have one.

For today here's both a vid of Dusty stills and an mp3 of what might be my very favourite Dusty song - somehow both uplifting and melancholy at the same time. The shifting chords of large blocks of strings under the sung melody, hints of harp - luscious orchestration.

Patsy Matheson and Bonnie and the Clydes

Well here we have a couple of great songs, one from UK singer Patsy Matheson about the dangers of not appreciating what you have, when what you have is special and the other from a band that promise a return to real country music and go about proving just that with some impressive playing and yodelling. Both albums are well worth checking out and if either are playing near you check them out.

My Darling Clementine - She Is Still my Weakness

There's loads of other lonesome music that I've been meaning to give an airing - a new HAL album (oddly Bee Gee-influenced), several Bonnie Prince Billy albums, Josh Ritter (really good actually) and a new Spain album (not as bad as the last, not as good as the first).

Maybe they'll get a post to themselves, but in the meantime here are My Darling Clementine with classic county-style duet (he's a Tindersticks style baritone, she's a woman wronged). From their album How do you plead? this was the track that made me think about posting again. There's pedal steel, a telecaster twanging somewhere in the corner and a hammond underpinning the whole thing. They are from the UK, but that really doesn't matter.

Fleet Foxes Sing Whitney

We lost our Dad at the end of last year and music hasn't seemed as comforting as it used to. That said, it seemed fitting to post this today. It's not really Fleet foxes, but that's not the point.

The photo above is my daughter Hannah, born on Friday Feb 10th, she's 2 days old as I write this.
